The Children's Aid Society launches their awareness campaign
WOODSTOCK - 'Never Leave A Child Alone in a Vehicle, Not Even for a Minute.'
That's the name of the new campaign launched Thursday by the Children's Aid Society and several community partners.
Protection Support Worker Jeremy Horrell says even with the windows down or the air conditioning on, children should never be left alone, even if you think you will just be a minute.
"The important part is, one minute can become ten minutes very quickly. You have no idea what is actually going on in the store. You walk in to deposit a cheque, there is a big line up in the bank. You walk into a grocery store, again, a line up. Maybe you see someone you know, you get talking. So a minute can turn into many more."
Horrell says when you leave a child alone in a vehicle they are not properly supervised.
"The emphasis is really on being sure your kids are safe, not wandering, not going missing, but then the health aspects of that. That's why we include Oxford County Public Health because they really stress the importance of, kids skin is much more susceptible to heat. They are little people right, so they are much more susceptible to some of the risks that are associated with heat stroke."
Horrell says if you spot a child in a vehicle alone you must immediately call 9-1-1.
Leon's of Woodstock joined the campaign this year and will be placing a billboard for the campaign on the back of one of their delivery trucks to help get the message out.
