Landfill Peer Review Team Tours Quarry

A tour of the site of the proposed landfill. That was one of the first steps taken by Oxford County's "Peer Review Team" on the Walker mega-dump proposal. The Review team is made up of 17 experts in their field, who are working with local municipalities to question and comment on the landfill proposal. On March 12th, the 17-member team, including Review Team Manager Chris Haussmann, took a guided tour of the pit. "They showed us around where exactly in the quarry area, that's already been mined out, where the landfill site would be. They gave us a rundown of how deep it is, and how much backfill they're actually going to be putting in before they even start the landfill site. As well, how much material they actually take out before they reach the limestone...it's a huge operation." (Photo of Carmuse plant on right) Haussmann says that tour included a drive through the surrounding community. "So we could get a sense, of not just the physical environment, specifically involved with the landfill site, but also the surrounding area and the community." He says there will be two opportunities for them to comment on Walker's proposal, when the draft Terms of Reference are submitted. "The Ministry will then be putting those out for a 30-day public review period, and we will have a further opportunity at that point to finalize our comments. So, there's really two opportunities to review and comment." Walker is expected to begin their Terms of Reference submissions to the MOE around May 22nd. That process should take several months, into the fall of this year: May 22nd - Draft Terms of Reference June 2013 - MOE Review of Draft Terms of Reference July 26th - Final Terms of Reference August 2013 - Submission of Final Terms of Reference September - December 2013 - MOE Review of Terms of Reference December 2013 - MOE Decision on Final Terms of Reference. The Terms of Reference must be approved by the Ministry before work on the Environmental Assessment can begin.
