The summer vacation begins for most students in Oxford County today and the Woodstock Police Service has a few safety tips.
OXFORD COUNTY - Today is the last day of school for kids in Oxford County!
This means you can expect to see a lot more kids out playing on residential streets, in parks and on school playgrounds over the next few months. Shaylyn Jackson, the Community Service Officer with the Woodstock Police Service, says drivers should be extra cautious while driving through those areas.
"When there's pedestrians, especially young kids who can sometimes have unpredictable behaviour like running out into the street to case after their basketball or whatever it may be, it's really important to be cautious and do your best to keep your eye out and be aware of what's going on around you."
Jackson says some parents will leave their older children at home by themselves over the summer while they're at work. She says those parents should make sure their child has access to a phone, so they can call 911 in case of an emergency.
"Talking to them about what kind of information the dispatchers are going to be asking. Knowing their location and that kind of information is really important for emergency services to access to make sure they respond in a timely manner."
If you have a pool at home, Jackson says the kids also shouldn't be swimming if there is no one there to supervise them.
If you're planning on going on a family trip this summer, Jackson says you should lock your doors, install timed outdoor lighting and have a friend or a neighbour check on your place every once in a while. You also shouldn't post any pictures of your trip on social media while you're away.
