The Ontario Living Wage Network says London, Elgin and Oxford had one of the lowest living wage rates in the province in 2023 with $18.85.
WOODSTOCK - The Woodstock Chamber has joined forces with United Way Oxford and Southwestern Public Health to shine a light on the benefits of paying a living wage.
Anne Coleman is the Director of Programs and Services with the Ontario Living Wage Network and she explains what a living wage is.
"The living wage is the hourly wage that a worker needs to earn to cover not just their basic expenses (based on a 35-hour work week), but also have a little bit extra to participate in community. With that being said, it's still a very modest wage because it doesn't include savings for retirement or debt repayment. It's meant to be a practical tool for employers to know they're paying their workers a decent wage and a practical tool for reducing poverty through paid work."
She says the living wage in London, Elgin and Oxford for 2023 was $18.85. The Southwest region (Windsor, Chatham, Sarnia) had the lowest living wage at $18.65, and the Greater Toronto Area had the highest living wage at $25.05. The Ontario Living Wage Network will release the living wage numbers for 2024 on Monday.
Mike Crabbe, the General Manager for the Woodstock Chamber of Commerce, says Coleman will be the guest speaker for the Living Wage Discovery Session at Chartwell Oxford Gardens on Thursday November 21st.
"Any opportunity we have to be able to share education with our business community is valuable. Knowledge earned is knowledge gained, so we encourage everyone to come out."
It runs from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. that day and breakfast will be provided. It's free to attend, but you have to register online here beforehand.
