Oxford County isn't known to be a Liberal friendly riding. That why it has been a bit of a surprise that Ingersoll was selected as the location for the first of 5 Leadership debates for the Ontario Liberal Party. The seven candidates vying to replace outgoing Premier Dalton McGunity will debate the issues this afternoon at the Fusion Youth Centre. Past Liberal candidate in Oxford, Dave Hilderly says, "Well, we can use all the help we can get here in Oxford County. It's definately a positive thing for us locally. I know we have had an overwhelming demand for the 5 tickets that we have available. It's a very positive sign for us." 150 Liberal members from across southwestern Ontario will be at the debate, which is also being webcasted. Hilderly says he thinks Ingersoll was chosen because the Liberals are looking to reach out to small town, rural Ontario. The seven would-be premiers will be trying to win over potential delegates who will be among the 25-hundred people who vote for the new Liberal leader. That leadership convention will be held in Toronto at the end of January.
