It remains a waiting game for farms in the two H-5 quarantine zones in Oxford County
It has been over two months since the first case of the H-5 influenza hit Oxford County.
Since then three poultry farms have tested positive for the virus and over 80,000 birds have euthanized. Two quarantine zones spanning a 10 km radius remain in place and their is no indication from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency as to when the zones will be lifted. Heart FM was able to get in contact with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency via email for an update on the situation. They say the C-F-I-A emergency response is ongoing and the control zones are still in effect and are not being lifted at this time. The control zones will only be lifted once the C-F-I-A is confident the virus has been adequately contained and would not give a precise timeline as to when that will be.
Once the cleaning and disinfection is complete the CFIA will be conducting an enhanced surveillance in Ontario for 90 days and if no new cases pop up in that time frame Canada will be able to regain it's free status. As for the economic impact two of Canada's key trading partners the United States and European Union have accepted the two Avian Influenza Zones in Ontario and are still accepting Canadian poultry. Other markets are still imposing temporary trade restrictions on Ontario poultry and poultry products which represents about 11 percent of Ontario's total exports.
