Local Officers Pay Respects to Fallen Guelph Constable

A young Guelph policewoman was remembered today as a vibrant and dynamic woman who fulfilled her childhood dream of becoming a cop. Thousands of mourners -- including police, firefighters and EMS -- packed into Guelph's Sleeman Centre to pay respects to Constable Jennifer Kovach. That included a local contingent of 6 from the Woodstock Police, including Chief Rod Freeman. "I think it's a constant reminder to people in the first responsers professions that there are dangers out there inherent to our profession. We've gotta be aware there are real dangers and we've got to take whatever measures we can to protect ourselves." The 26-year-old officer died last week while responding to another officer's call for assistance. Her cruiser crossed the centre line and collided with a city bus. Freeman says the 2 1/2 hour funeral was "emotional", hearing from Kovach's family, friends and colleagues. "I find each and every one of them an emotional event...being a parent myself, I really feel for parents out there who lose their child, because they chose policing as a career." Kovach was the daughter of Gloria Kovach, a longtime city councillor in Guelph. Guelph Police Chief Bryan Larkin described Kovach as a vibrant and dynamic woman who fulfilled her childhood dream of becoming a police officer.
