Not all heroes wear capes, they often times drive ambulances. A local paramedic was honoured for his bravery after he jumped out of a moving vehicle to save a woman who was about to jump off a bridge in Woodstock.
WOODSTOCK - A paramedic from Oxford County has been given an award for bravery.
Joseph Vandermeer was presented with the Ontario Award for Paramedic bravery at a special ceremony at Queen's Park in Toronto last night. The award recognizes paramedics who have displayed exceptional acts of courage, performed on the job or off-duty, in the face of grave, personal danger.
Back in June of this year, Vandermeer and his partner were called to the 401 in Woodstock about a woman running along the overpass. They noticed Woodstock firefighters chasing the woman. As paramedics moved their ambulance closer to the woman, she started to sprint towards the side of the overpass. Paramedic Vandermeer instinctively knew she was intending to jump onto the highway below and leapt out of the moving ambulance to stop her and pull her back to safety.
