Two local boys are fundraising with their soccer team after the team was selected to attend a scouting tournament in Florida.
WOODSTOCK - Two local soccer players are preparing to show off their talents at the Disney Soccer Showcase coming up in December.
Luccas Matern and Grant Takacs have been playing the sport for 12 years; starting when they both stepped onto the pitch in Timbits soccer at 3 years-old in Woodstock. They spent many years playing soccer in the Friendly City but the pair are now teammates on the North London soccer club.
Luccas says the Showcase is an opportunity for them to display their talents in front of scouts for potential scholarships. "We just play three games... chance to win the whole tournament. We play all of North America so there's a bunch of teams, there's one team from Quebec that I know of going there and the rest are from the States."
The trip will cost each person roughly $1500; as Grant points out, the team is working to raise funds to help offset the costs for the players. "It's pretty expensive so we're hoping to make some money as a team and hopefully pay some of that off."
So far the team's fundraisers are:
-Selling Rheo Thompson mint chocolates for $2 - all team members participating
-Silpada Jewellery party (hosted in London but will take email/online orders) October 16th
-Jr. High Dance at BMO Soccer Centre in London October 31st
-Frozen Food by local London Chef from Arthur Voaden S.S. and Clark Road School
-Poker night in London date TDB
-Bottle Drives - Luccas & Grant will be doing theirs Saturday October 18th and will pick up the donated bottles
-Volleyball tournament at Spikes in London November 15th
-Silent Auction (information is listed on Facebook page U15 NL Boys Disney Showcase Tournament)
Team applied for the tournament in May and found out in August they had been accepted. A number of teams apply each year but only a selected few are invited to play depending on their winning records and overall stats.
