London City Council voted against the motion calling on Mayor Joe Fontana to step aside temporarily. The motion was defeated by a vote of 8-5 last night. Fontana abstained from the vote. Fontana is currently facing criminal charges after it was alleged he inappropriately used federal government funds to help pay for his son's wedding in 2005. Fontana, who was a Liberal MP at the time, denies any wrongdoing. Fontana was formally charged by the RCMP in November with with fraud under $5000, breach of trust by a public official and uttering forged documents. He will make his first court appearance next month. Councillor Joni Baechler brought the motion forward suggesting that Fontana step aside while the case was in court. Baechler says this gave the councillors the chance to debate the issue in public. According to the Municipal Act, Fontana can not be forced to resign.
