The tribunal for the Law Society of Ontario says James Battin engaged in professional misconduct.
TILLSONBURG - A Tillsonburg based lawyer has had his law licence revoked and has been ordered to pay over $44,000 to the Law Society of Ontario (LSO).
The LSO's tribunal says James Battin engaged in professional misconduct between July 2017 and May 2019, when he circumvented Legal Aid Ontario's billing requirements and made misleading statements to his client and Legal Aid Ontario.
It says Battin took close to $12,000 from a clients trust fund. He told the tribunal that he was in a private agreement with the client, but the client said otherwise.
Battin has represented lots of people since he was first called to the bar in 1980, including former Woodstock Mayor Trevor Birtch in his recent assault trials. The LSO says this the first time he has been subject to disciplinary action.
Heart FM reached out to Battin's office for comment. We were informed that Battin was not there and was not speaking to the media regarding this matter.
You can find more information regarding the ruling from the LSO tribunal and the hearings that were held on May 13th, 2025 and December 13th, 2024 online here.
