Louise Arbour has been sworn in as Canada's 31st governor general.
OTTAWA - Canada officially has a new governor general.
Former Supreme Court justice Louise Arbour was installed as Canada's 31st governor general at the Senate of Canada building this morning. The ceremony included her swearing in, a 21 gun salute and the raising of the Governor General's flag on the Peace Tower.
Arbor was an international prosecutor known for war-crimes and genocide cases. This included the indictment of Slobodan Milosevic.
She succeeds Mary Simon, who made history as Canada's first Indigenous governor general in 2021. She championed Canada's reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples during her five-year term.
