CHICAGO - Long-time TV host Jerry Springer has died at the age of 79.
He was best known for the Jerry Springer Show, which ran for 27 years, and at one point topped the Oprah Show. The weekday afternoon show featured a circus of dysfunctional families airing the dirty laundry live including brawls, obscenities, and blurred images of nudity.
Family spokesperson and friend of Springer's since 1970 Jene Galvin released a statement today with his condolences.
"Jerry’s ability to connect with people was at the heart of his success in everything he tried whether that was politics, broadcasting or just joking with people on the street who wanted a photo or a word. He’s irreplaceable and his loss hurts immensely, but memories of his intellect, heart, and humor will live on."
The statement mentioned that Springer died peacefully at home in suburban Chicago after a brief illness.
