MP for Oxford Dave MacKenzie vows to stay neutral in the Conservative leadership race.
The MP for Oxford County is going to stay neutral during the Conservative Leadership race.
Dave Mackenzie is the Deputy Whip for the party and the whip, deputy whip, and interim leader have all taken the position that they will not endorse a candidate.
"It's not a good position for us to be in to support someone and then when we have issues that need to be addressed, it would seem like you were favouring one over another."
When asked he did admit that adding Kevin O'Leary to the fold will likely lead to more media attention.
"No question that Mr. O'leary brings some colour to the campaign and I think he has made a lot of other people interested in the campaign. I just read some correspondence this morning [from people] who may or may not support him but now want to buy memberships to at least vote in the leadership campaign. I think with Mr. O'leary in, it does bring that colour and that light to the party and we will start to see our current leadership contenders start to stand out from one another."
Right now they have 14 candidates competing for the top spot in the Federal Conservative party. Mackenzie says he doesn't expect to see many people drop out either before the party members have their vote.
Here are the 14 candidates to replace Stephen Harper as the leader of the Conservative Party.
- Chris Alexander
- Maxime Bernier
- Steven Blaney
- Michael Chong
- Kellie Leitch
- Pierre Lemieux
- Deepak Obhrai
- Kevin O’Leary
- Erin O’Toole
- Rick Peterson
- Lisa Raitt
- Andrew Saxton
- Andrew Scheer
- Brad Trost
