Thistle Theatre has received an Ontario 150 grant to help cover some of the cost to make Embro Town Hall accessible.
EMBRO - Thistle Theatre is doing their part to make theatre accessible to all.
They are the proud recipients of an Ontario 150 grant worth $160,000 so they can install an elevator and accessible washroom at Embro Town Hall,.
A major difficulty presented itself early on - the Town Hall simply didn't have the space to accommodate an indoor elevator. Chair of the 150 Project for Thistle Theatre Wendy Marshall credits a member of their board for coming up with a simple solution.
"Someone on our board actually had an out of the box idea and that was, 'Why can't we put a lift on the outside of the building?' And so that's what we're doing - we're installing a glass lift that will come in at the ground level and have a stop at the first floor where the main lobby is and the Embro County Library. And then the second stop will be on the second floor where our theatre is located."
The grant money will handle the lion's share of the funding, but not all according to Marshall.
"Zorra Township is also going to be helping us out with the money and then we are going to the public and our community asking for donations to raise the rest of the funds."
Donors will be acknowledged on an appreciation wall and charitable receipts will also be available for donations over $20.
Cheques can be sent to Thistle Theatre addressed to Zorra Township with a note indicating 'Embro Town Hall.'
They hope to break ground for the elevator next month.
