NIAGARA FALLS - After a long battle MarineLand has rehomed Smooshi the walrus her calf Koyuk.
Phil Demers, animal activist for the walrus', has been fighting for the pair for over 10 years.
In 2012 an investigation into MarineLand Canada heard Demers, who was a animal trainer for MarineLand at the time, speak out about the well-being of the captive walrus. The so-called whistleblowing prompted the company to sue Demers for attempting to kidnap the walrus.
In September 2022, Marineland dropped the $1.5 million lawsuit against Demers and agreed to move mom and her baby.
Demers shared his happiness over the decision on Facebook.
"Smooshi the walrus and her calf Koyuk have left MarineLand for their new home at SeaWorld in Abu Dhabi. Despite this being in breach of our settlement agreement, I am ecstatic that they are off to a brand new and improved facility, and out of MarineLand forever."
Marineland has registered to lobby the Ontario government in hopes of selling the park.
Smooshi and her calf were the last remaining captive walrus' in Canada.
