Marketplace ad scams are still present in Oxford county, with stolen photos, deposits, and pressured sales being part of the schemes.
OXFORD COUNTY - Police want to remind the public that online marketplace scams are still occurring in our communities.
On Monday, January 22, 2024, at approximately 8:30 p.m., the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Oxford Detachment were notified of a suspected fraud in South-West Oxford Township.
A local resident responded to an ad on an online marketplace advertising a couch for sale. The buyer sent a $50 deposit through electronic banking. The seller stopped communicating with the buyer after the deposit was sent.
The OPP is warning all Oxford County residents to be extremely vigilant when searching online sites with items for sale. Some scam artists use stolen photos in their ads, claiming they are pictures of items that they have for sale. The seller will ask for the entire amount or a deposit in advance and once they receive the money they stop responding or delete the ad altogether.
To avoid these types of scams, remember the following:
-Know whom you are dealing with - independently confirm your seller's name, street, address, and telephone number.
-Resist pressure to "act now." If an offer sounds too good to be true it usually is.
-NEVER wire money or use a bank-to-bank transfer in a transaction.
-ALWAYS try to deal locally when buying or selling merchandise.
-DO NOT sell or buy anything from someone who is unable or unwilling to meet you face to face.
-Take advantage of the PROJECT SAFE TRADE parking spots at the Ingersoll and Tillsonburg OPP Detachments when meeting to sell or purchase items.
