Mary Simon Becomes Canada's First Indigenous Governor General

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has named Inuit leader Mary Simon as the country's next Governor General.

Simon, who hails from Nunavik, Quebec, is the country's first Indigenous Governor General. 

She is an Officer of the Order of Canada and her work with the federal government includes experience as an Arctic embassador. 

The new appointee has also been an advocate for Inuit rights. 

Simon will represent the Queen in Canada, become the top commander of the Canadian Armed Forces, and represent the country at events both at home and abroad. 

Other duties will include presiding over the swearing-in of the prime minister, cabinet ministers and the chief justice of Canada, and giving royal assent to acts of Parliament.
