Mayberry Files

A familiar name will be returning to the election ballot in Southwest Oxford.

Southwest Oxford residents have their first municipal candidate.

It's current mayor David Mayberry who has filed his papers for reelection.

Mayberry says he's ready for another four years.

"I particularly enjoyed working at the County level and learning about a whole lot of things I didn't know about particularly in Social Services, that part of our work that you really don't see at the township level. That's one of the reasons.  I've enjoyed it and I've certainly enjoyed working with people. I think it's been a good experience and there's a lot of things I'd like to see us complete."

He says his open attitude toward people and situations makes him great for the position.

"I'm more than willing to hear people when they are upset about issues and that because I think I want to be helpful, I want to resolve some problems. I also think I bring a fairly positive attitude around what we want to accomplish as a municipality and as a county."

Mayberry says one of the huge challenges over the next four years is trying to keep increasing costs under control.

"You see the provincial government walking away from the municipal partnership a couple hundred thousand dollars at a time. We see an increase cost of policing. We are seeing a number of increased costs and we are struggling to find new tax payers or whatever without having to add it specifically to the taxpayers that are already there."

From a County perspective Mayberry says the work being done around Oxford and whether services offered are efficient and needed will continue to be a big topic.
