McGuinty Steps Down

Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne is calling her predecessor an "unwavering political force'' after Dalton McGuinty announced he's resigning as a member of provincial parliament. Wynne says as premier, McGuinty steered Ontario through a global recession and three general elections. McGuinty says the end of the legislative session is "an opportune time'' for him to end his service to the people of his Ottawa riding after nearly 23 years. He says he's leaving politics with his idealism intact. In a two-page statement announcing his intention to resign, McGuinty makes no mention of his controversial decisions to cancel gas plants in Oakville and Mississauga to save Liberal seats in the 2011 election. He's also leaving amid fresh allegations that top Liberal staff in his office wiped out email accounts to try to cover up the costs of cancelling the projects.
