The 2023 Mixed and Senior Mixed Curling Championships will officially get underway at the Woodstock Curling Centre today.
WOODSTOCK - The Woodstock Curling Centre is going to be a busy place over the next couple of days.
The 2023 Mixed and Senior Mixed Curling Championships will officially get underway this afternoon.
Sixty-four curlers will be hitting the ice and Co-Chair Darlene Wood says they're some of the best in the province.
"Some of these curlers have already previously been to nationals. So you are going to see and we are going to see some excellent curling this weekend. We are so looking forward to hosting this event!"
The mixed side of the tournament includes teams of two men and two women, all between the ages of 20 and 50 plus. The teams competing in the senior mixed tournament also include two men and two women, with the women over 45 years old and the men over 50.
Wood explains the playoff format for the two championships.
"They will work their way through the round-robin, the top teams will advance to the semifinals and two teams from there will go on to the finals. On the mixed side of the competition, the winners will move on to nationals. For the seniors mixed, this is their provincial championship. The winners will go home with a banner for their curling centre and they will finish off their season in that regard."
Both of the tournaments will have their finals on Sunday April 16th. Members of the public are welcome to stop by the Woodstock Curling Centre to watch all of the action for free anytime throughout the tournament. The games can also be livestreamed online here.
The official opening ceremony will be taking place at 6:45 p.m. tonight and Heart FM's very own Dan Henry will be the master of ceremonies.
Darlene Wood stopped by the Heart FM studio with Alison Pegg this morning to chat with Dan and Marcie about the tournament. You can listen to the full interview below:
