Motion to Make Oxford Run 100% on Renewable Energy by 2050

Oxford County council will decide on Wednesday night if they want to be 100 percent reliant on renewable energy by 2050.

Oxford County council will decide on Wednesday night if they want to be 100 percent reliant on renewable energy by 2050.

This was one of the recommendations from the community sustainability committee who will be presenting their final draft plan at the council meeting. Woodstock Mayor Trevor Birtch has indicated he is going to put forth the motion on the renewable energy 2050 plan. This would mean we would get off fossil fuels, nuclear power and only use renewable sources for our energy in Oxford. Warden Mayberry tells Heart FM this would make us a leader in Canada as right now only the City of Vancouver is doing this. "This is a message to industry across the County that this is where council believes we need to go and we believe it will enhance and excite the economy and attract businesses to say if Oxford is going to be a leader, that's the place we should be to make sure this happens."

Mayberry says this is the wave of the future and already we are seeing the costs for renewable energy sources start to go down and he thinks they will continue that trend in the future. He says once you get the infrastructure in place, then all of the other sources of renewable energy are essentially free. Renewable Energy 2050 was one of the recommendations from the Community Sustainability committee and council will vote on Mayor Birtch's motion on Wednesday night.
