Motorcycle Deaths Hit a 9 Year High in Ontario

Oxford OPP are hoping to put an emphasis on motorcycle safety ahead of the busy Victoria Day Long Weekend on Ontario roads and trails.

Oxford OPP are hoping to put an emphasis on motorcycle safety ahead of the busy Victoria Day Long Weekend on Ontario roads and trails. Police are reporting a nine year high in motorcycle deaths. In 2014 alone 32 people have died in motorcycle crashes on OPP patrolled roads. On a positive note the number of off road vehicle deaths in Ontario are the lowest they have been in 11 years, with 11 people having died in 2014. The number one common factor in these deaths is the person is not restrained and ejection almost always occurs in the event of a crash. With this in mind OPP are reminding operators to wear as much protective gear as you can and to always ride with a helmet on. The second biggest factor in bike crashes is speed. Police are asking the general public to slow down and drive with common sense. OPP also want to make sure all motorists share the road and make sure you are aware of your surroundings. You should always be aware of your surroundings and make sure to check your blind spots as the bikes can sneak up on you in a hurry. Over the Victoria Day Long Weekend, the OPP expects to see motorcyclists and ORV riders in great numbers throughout the province. They are counting on all of them to keep themselves, their passengers and all those with whom they share the road and trails safe at all times. This means refraining from consuming alcohol and drugs before heading out for a ride and observing all other laws associated with motorcycle and ORV riding.
