"People are wondering if it is safe, when we come out of this pandemic, to congregate for worship, is it ok for them to come out dressed in a hijab or look a little different."
WOODSTOCK - The Muslim Association of Woodstock is still in mourning, following the horrific terrorist attack in London on Sunday night.
A family of 5 was targeted in the attack, while going out for an evening walk. Four family members died in the attack and the lone survivor is a 9 year old boy, who is recovering for serious injuries.
A spokesperson for the family, has identified the victims as Salman Afzaal, his wife Madhia, their daughter Yumna and Salman's mother. The only survivor in the attack is 9 year old Fayez Afzaal.
Vice President of the Muslim Association of Woodstock Mohammed Ismail says it has been a tough 24 hours for everyone in Canada.
"The Muslim community in Woodstock is shocked and saddened by what has happened in London, as I am sure most Canadians are across the country. We obviously condemn such hateful attacks on anyone based on faith, colour, gender or sexual orientation."
He adds this attack does raise fears for his community.
"People are wondering if it is safe, when we come out of this pandemic, to congregate for worship, is it ok for them to come out dressed in a hijab or look a little different."
Mohammed Ismail says right now though, there number one concern is the wellbeing of the sole survivor of this attack.
They are having talks regarding a local tribute or vigil. We will be following this closely and updating with more information when it becomes available.
If you wish to donate to the 9 year old boy, who lost his parents, sister and grandmother, you can do so here.
