National Impaired Driving Prevention Week

"There's a lot of different types of impaired driving. Obviously, alcohol impaired driving is a high concern for us, but also drug impaired driving. Not just illicit drugs either, even prescription drugs can be strong enough to impair our driving ability."  Shaylyn Jackson

WOODSTOCK - It is National Impaired Driving Prevention Week!

Designated during the 3rd week of March, it focuses on the importance of educating Canadians about the consequences of impaired driving. Impaired driving doesn't just apply to cars– It applies to motorcycles, boats, ATVs, snowmobiles and other forms of transportation.

Special Constable Shaylyn Jackson wanted to remind the community that impaired driving doesn't always mean drunk driving.

"There's a lot of different types of impaired driving. Obviously, alcohol impaired driving is a high concern for us, but also drug impaired driving. Not just illicit drugs either, even prescription drugs can be strong enough to impair our driving ability."

According to statistics, drug-impaired driving incidents in Canada have increased by 43%.

She added that distracted driving like texting, taking phone calls or changing songs can be equally as dangerous.

Jackson also highlighted that driving while tired is something we need to take caution of as well.

"If you've worked a night shift, or you've been on the road for a long time. Maybe switch drivers if you can or pull over and find a safe place to stay for a while until you are able to ensure your driving ability is not impaired."

When driving at 100 km/h, a driver can travel 150 meters in only six seconds. A driver's eyes only need to be closed for three or four seconds to cause disastrous consequences.

Remember, there are many things beyond your control, but impaired driving isn't. Learn more here
