The House of Commons has elected a new speaker. The votes were cast, and Liberal member of Parliament, Greg Fergus has been chosen for the position.
OTTAWA - There is a new speaker in the House of Commons.
It was a historic mid-session vote, which came after the resignation of former speaker Anthony Rota. He gave up his post after he honoured a man who fought for the Nazis in World War II.
After the votes were counted, Liberal member of Parliament Greg Fergus has been named to the position, and he was first elected in the riding of Hull-Aylmer in 2015.
Fergus was greeted by a standing ovation, hand shakes, and hugs by members of the Liberal, NDP and Bloc Quebecois, while the Conservatives only had a small number of people.
He says he wants to lead firmly, thoughtfully and collaboratively.
