The Woodstock Navy Vets are kicking off their 50th season tonight with their free home opener.
WOODSTOCK - It is only a matter of hours before the Navy Vets begin a big year of hockey.
Many players are returning for the 2015/16 season following their successful run last year. President of the Navy Vets, Devon Young, knows tonight's game is going to be exciting. "It is the third free home opener. We like to get the crowd engaged early in the year. It is also the 50th year, we're very, very excited to be kick that off and all that entails. Of course there is the opening ceremonies, we also have a couple of rather important people from the community coming out for the opening puck drop."
Young discusses how successful the pre-season was and what lies ahead for the team. "It went really well. For the most part we didn't dress our entire lineup until late in the pre-season in which case when we did, we saw quite a bit of success. We are looking forward to seeing what this team can do: most of our guys are back from last year, we are going to be a little bit older and a little bit more mature."
The home opener will begin at 7:45 p.m. against the Wellesley Applejacks. Young has a few more special nights planned throughout the year. "We've kind of taken a page out of pro-sports: breast cancer awareness month is in October, we also celebrate remembrance day in November, as well as Alzheimer in December."
Young mentions the Navy Vets would love to see the community turn out for the kickoff. "Wear blue, be loud, enjoy the game. Goff Hall is also rented for a little after party for those who would like to stay after."
