If a new report becomes a reality, you could be paying for Toronto's public transit upgrades. Metrolinx is suggesting a sales tax hike and a five-cents per-litre gas tax to help pay for improved public transit in the Toronto and Hamilton area. A new report from Ontario's transportation agency proposes several ideas -- including a one percentage point increase in the sales tax -- to help raise $2-billion per year for transit funding. Metrolinx says Ottawa's approval would be needed to increase the H-S-T to 14% from the current 13%. Transportation Minister Glen Murray says gridlock in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area costs Ontario's economy about $6-billion a year and the problem will get much worse if it's not addressed.
