The new minimum wage will be $1.90 short of the living wage in Oxford, Elgin and London.
OXFORD COUNTY - The minimum wage may be going up, but it's still not going to be enough for those living in our area
Ontario's minimum wage will increase to $17.60 as October 1st, but the Ontario Living Wage Network has calculated the living wage at $19.50 for Oxford, Elgin and London.
The living wage is an hourly wage that a worker needs to make to not only cover their basic needs, but also be able to participate in community. It's based on a 35-hour work week and it doesn't include savings for retirement or debt repayment.
The Ontario Living Wage Network says people making living wage on Oxford, Elgin and London will fall short by $66.50 each week, but it could be much worse.
The living wage in the Greater Toronto Area is set at $26.00, which is $8.40 more than the new minimum wage. This means people living in that area will fall short by $294 each week.
