New Rules Proposed for Methadone Clinics

New rules are coming in Woodstock for where methadone clinics are able to go. But the current Dundas St. clinic, Clinic 461, won't be affected by the new regulations. The change will separate "Methadone Maintenance Treatment" facilities, or MMT's, for the city to deal with on a case-by-case basis. Right now they're in the same zoning class as regular pharmacies. Planner Gord Hough told city council this week, that new rules will give the city more control. "The plan is to implement policies that will provide that guidance. Every instance where a clinic wants to locate will require an amendment to the zoning bylaw," said Hough. The new rules will place a buffer between any new clinics and schools. But at the same time, Hough says it's important that they be located on a public transit route with good visibility, adequate parking, and a large enough waiting room so people aren't forced to loiter outside. A public meeting is expected to take place on December 10th, before council gives final approval.
