Oxford Attack Basketball launches major atom girls program

The brand new Oxford Attack Under 12 Major Atom Girls competitive basketball team played their first games ever over the weekend in a tournament in Dundas and improved every game culminating with their first win in the final game.

The Attack opened the tournament versus the Durham City Chameleons in an end-to-end, fast break, full court pressing style of game and came up just short of an exciting 30 to 27 score.  Beth Ewing and Ashley Docherty led the Attack with 6 points each while Hannah Cowan and Emma Hagen-Johnson played tough defense against the Chameleons biggest and strongest player.  Amanda Witmer potted 4 points and gained valuable confidence as the game wore on.  Laila Taha playing as an underage player scored her first hoop of her career also.

The Attack next faced the established Flamborough Fire girls and continued to surprise their coaches by battling hard against a superior opponent en route to a respectable 42 – 23 loss.  Kyra Rothernel, Logan Machin and Alexis Birch each had 4 points for the Attack’s balanced score sheet.  Ainsley Docherty had 3 big points including her first free throw.

The Attack battled the Port Colborne Hornets in their 3rd game and experienced a tough 36 – 13 loss from multiple missed backboard shots and turnovers not unexpected for a new team in their second game of the day.  Hannah Cowan had 5 points while Jaime Magoffin scored 4 points.

The Attack met the North Toronto Crazy Catz in their final game and demonstrated their steadily improving play with a solid 46 – 30 win.  The Attack ran their out of bounds plays to near perfection scoring many inside baskets.  Ashley Docherty led the Attack with 8 points including a couple of driving layups.  Larissa Bayliss significantly improved her defense in this final game and also contributed 6 points.  Ewing, Machin and Cowan also had 6 points each.  Ainsley Docherty nailed 2 out of 4 free throws.  Judy Seng improved her defense throughout the tournament.

The Oxford Attack players of their first tournament were the Attack’s entire team.  The girls have been learning and practicing hard and all performed above expectations this weekend against some established teams.

Next up for the Attack U-12 girls is a tournament in Flamborough in two weeks.
