Party hosts are encouraged to take steps to ensure everyone has a safe and happy New Year's Eve.
WOODSTOCK - As New Year's Eve nears, it's important for anyone planning on hosting a party to take steps to make sure everyone is safe when the ball drops.
Woodstock Police Constable Nikki VanLeeuwen, says if you are the host of the party make sure it doesn't get out of hand. "If you are having a party make sure that you serve food, offer a taxi, and be careful on social media that you don't post your party - keep it on your private messages. Only invite a certain amount of people so you don't have those party crashers that may cause some issues and problems and damage property, because we do see that happen."
Constable VanLeeuwen says it's important for hosts to keep a clear head so they can control the party. "If you are hosting a party it is really important that you stay sober or if you are going to indulge and have a drink or two, don't over-consume to the point where you don't know what is going on at your party. You are responsible for what happens at your home and nobody wants people to get themselves in the situation where they sneak into your house then drive under the influence."
Constable VanLeeuwen says despite all their best efforts people continue to drive while impaired. "This is an ongoing issue and it is frustrating that people are still making poor choices to drink and drive because there is absolutely no reason for it. Everybody has a friend or family member that if you plan ahead they will pick you up or drive you home; taxi cabs - they are available 24/7. So it is important to think and plan ahead before you go out for the evening."
