No Injuries Reported Following Saturday Morning Fire

The Woodstock Fire Department says a fire pit was not properly extinguished on Stone Gate Drive over the weekend, causing a semi-detached home to go up in flames.

WOODSTOCK - No one was hurt after a semi-detached home went up in flames on Stone Gate Drive in Woodstock.

The Woodstock Fire Department got the call at about 5:10 a.m. on Saturday. Public Information Coordinator Lisa Woods says the fire originated in the backyard.

"The fire pit in the backyard was not properly extinguished before the residents went to bed. As a result, a spark was able to ignite the furniture and the lawn on fire which spread to the home."

Woods says neighbours spotted the flames and acted quickly.

"Neighbours up early in the morning noticed the fire rapidly moving towards the home. They got to the house, knocked on the doors of the two semi-detached homes and got the residents up and out of the house."

There were three residents inside the unit where the fire originated and six residents in the neighbouring unit at the time.

The damage is estimated at about $1.25-million.

If you are having an open-air burn in your backyard, Woods says you need to make sure the fire pit is doused, turned over and well-watered before you leave the area.

Woods is also reminding everyone about the importance of having working smoke alarms on every level of the home. She also says the Woodstock Fire Department inspects your home whenever you apply for an open-air burn permit.
