The farm tax ratio was a hot topic at the latest Oxford County Council meeting.
OXFORD COUNTY - There was a lot of debate in council chambers as Oxford County Council discussed a tax ratio for farmland owners.
The Oxford County Federation of Agriculture presented a delegation, asking for a ratio of 0.21 instead of the current ratio of 0.25.
Warden David Mayberry understands why the farmers would like a tax break.
"Over the last three or four years it has gone up considerably. In fact if we left it at the rate it is it would be a 50 percent increase over four years."
But Councillor Steven Molnar voiced his concerns; adding someone has to pay the price in the end.
Warden David Mayberry says council decided to vote against McKay's motion 5-4.
"Council decided not to because it seemed like too much. They want a report to come back at the next meeting, where they will look at maybe a slight reduction but not as much as what was proposed by Councillor McKay."
Council will consider a ratio of 0.235 at their next meeting on April 11th.
