Nominations Open

Nominations are officially open for the 2014 municipal election

Nominations are officially open for the up coming municipal election.

Those looking to become school board trustee, councillor or mayor can officially throw their name into the running today.

Deputy City Clerk Amy Humphries says while it's a great way to be involved in the community, attending council meetings is just one part of the job of municipal politicians.

"Their email addresses and phone numbers are made public on our website so that the citizens can quite easily get in touch with them. When people are concerned, the councillors often times will be their first line of defense. There's a lot of information that's covered in our council meetings, there's a lot of reading that needs to be done and a lot of questions that need to be asked."

Those considering a run will need a few things, the filing fee of $100 or $200 if you're running for mayor, you must be 18 years of age or older, a Canadian citizen, you must be a resident of the municipality you're running in, as well as a nomination package.

Humphries says the nominations package is quite thick.

"There's an official nomination form as well as a few other forms, you know, declaring that they will set up the bank account they need to set up, declaring that it's okay to release their personal information. Obviously the public needs to know their name and things like that and then at the back of the package there's 4 pages that need to be signed and declarations that need to be made."

There is a $100 filing fee for all positions except mayor which is $200 but if a nominee receives more than 2 percent of the vote, that money will be refunded.

Those considering a run at the election have until September 12 at 2:30pm at submit their application.
