For the first time in Norwich Township's history, Council has decided to endorse mail-in voting for the next municipal election.
NORWICH TOWNSHIP - Eligible voters in Norwich Township will be able cast their ballot from the comfort of their own home.
Norwich Township Council has decided to endorse mail-in voting and the use of tabulators for counting ballots for the next municipal election in October, 2022.
Mayor Larry Martin says the ballots will be mailed out to eligible voters about two weeks before election day.
"They will mark it and attest to that this is their vote and this is their signature. They will go in separately and then the ballots will be stored until election day and then they will be brought out and they will be ran through the tabulator to get their final count."
Council decided to endorse this option for the first time in the Township's history due to the uncertainty of the pandemic.
Martin says it was not a unanimous decision Tuesday night, adding it was a 3-2 vote in the end. He says one of the main concerns was that there is no way of truly knowing who is filling out the ballot, but if people are honest they will do the right thing and fill out the ballot correctly.
Martin says they also discussed the idea of online voting, but they decided against it because some people may struggle with the technology and not all residents have access to a computer.
"We feel that with this, as far as the Township of Norwich goes with the different ethnics and everything that we have within the Township, we can accommodate more people with mail-in than with online voting."
Martin says there will be no in person polls next year, adding hybrid voting models are too hard to manipulate. He says voters will be able to drop their ballot off at the Township Office if they don't feel comfortable mailing it in.
