An OPP officer is being hailed a hero after venturing into icy water to save a dog in the town of Essex.
ESSEX - An OPP officer in Essex is being tabbed a hero today after venturing into frigid waters to save a dog who was trapped in the Cedar Creek in the Town of Essex.
Police were called to the Cedar Creek bridge after getting word of a dog trapped on the ice. Police decided to rescue the dog and one of the officers tied a rope around his body and waded into the icy water. He walked about 20 feet and retrieved the dog. The officer was pulled back to safety and the dog was taken into care for the animal control officer.
Immediately following the rescue, the officer began to show signs of hypothermia and was taken to the hospital, He was in the chilly water for about 2 minutes, which was just above his waist line.
Both the dog and the officer are expected to make a full recovery.
"The Essex Fire and Rescue would like to warn members of the public that thin ice and frigid waters are very dangerous, and citizens should NEVER venture into adverse conditions. At this time of year, hypothermia can set in within 2 minutes of exposure to the cold weather or cold waters."
