Bill C-34 would force social media sites to block kids under 16. It would also regulate the companies behind AI chatbots.
OTTAWA - The Liberal Government has tabled online safety legislation in the House of Commons.
Bill C-34 would force social media sites to block kids under 16, but they could get an exemption if they have sufficient safeguards in place. The legislation also looks to regulate the companies behind AI chatbots, imposing a duty on them to act responsibly.
Both Google and Meta have stated that they are currently assessing the legislation.
Meanwhile, the Canadian Medical Association has praised Bill C-24, saying it makes our country a global leader. Dr. Bolu Ogunyemi says it's unacceptable for foreign-owned platforms to keep getting rich at the expense of the mental health, privacy, and personal safety of children.
