Faculty at two dozen colleges in Ontario have gone on strike, affecting more than half-a-million students.
ONTARIO - Over 500-thousand students will be effected by the announcement that the faculty at 24 Ontario colleges have gone on strike.
The announcement came at 12:01am Monday as OPSEU says the two sides couldn't come to an agreement. The strike effects the stass and students satellite campuses of Fanshawe College as well here in Woodstock.
The union's demands would have added more than 250-million dollars in annual costs, and The College Employer Council is calling the strike unnecessary.
The union presented a proposal Saturday night that called for the number of full time faculty to match the number of faculty members on contract.
Improvements in job security was also an issue, as well as faculty to have a stronger voice when it comes to academic decision making.
OPSEU President Warren (Smokey) Thomas called the current situation “regrettable” but adds that the college faculty have the full backing of the union’s 130,000 members and their $72 million strike fund.
The strike involves more than 12,000 professors, instructors, counsellors, and librarians across the province.
