The funding will also go towards culturally appropriate mental health supports for survivors and their families.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced $10 million in funding today to support the identification, investigation, protection and commemoration of Indian Residential School burial sites across the province.
Ford says the funding will also provide culturally appropriate mental health supports for Indian Residential School survivors, their families and Indigenous communities.
Over 150,000 children were forcibly removed from their families and sent to Indian Residential Schools across Canada between 1870 and 1996. Ontario had at least 18 Residential Schools, the last one closed in 1991. Most of them have been re-purposed, abandoned or destroyed.
Work will start with identifying the sites and everything will be done in collaboration with Indigenous leaders. Each phase of this work will be guided by Indigenous leaders.
At least 426 children are known to have died at residential schools in Ontario and 12 unmarked graves have already been discovered.
One of the speakers at the announcement was Francis Kavanaugh, Ogichidaa (Grand Chief) of the Anishinaabe Nation in Treaty #3 represented by Grand Council Treaty #3. You can listen to his full remarks below:
