Ontario has passed new legislation which will increase the penalties for drivers who text or use a handheld phone while driving. The update also imposes a one-metre distance rule between motor vehicles and bicycles, and hike fines for "dooring" a cyclist. "Dooring" occurs when a driver or passenger in a car opens their door into the path of a cyclist. Fines for distracted driving will increase from the old range of $60 to $500 to between $300 to $1,000 plus three demerit points under the new legislation. The cycling fines will increase to the same cost as distracted driving. Police will also be able to hand out a fine that will force drivers to wait until pedestrians completely cross the road at school crossings.
OPP say distracted driving is now the number one killer on Ontario roads and accounts for more deaths than impaired driving or speeding.
