The governing Liberals are bringing in a regulation that would limit class sizes from kindergarten to Grade 12. The new rule would ensure that full-day kindergarten classes with two instructors would have an average of 26 children. It would cap classes from junior kindergarten to Grade 3 at 23 students, with 90 per cent of classes at 20 or fewer students. Grades 4 to 8 classes would have an average of 24.5 students, and Grades 9 to 12 would have an average of 22 students. The Liberals say the move will improve learning for students and preserve teacher jobs. The government has been having a tough time convincing teachers' unions to accept a wage freeze among broader public sector workers.
