OPP Investigate Suspected Illegal Trophy Hunting

Two more deer carcasses have been discovered missing the heads and fur, as well as bags left on the roadside with 12 heads and various legs.

Numerous cases of suspected Illegal Trophy Hunting have begun to appear in the area.

The OPP are investigating two deer carcasses that were dropped off on the side of Brant Waterloo Road in garbage bags sometime between Friday and Monday. Constable Ed Sanchuk says this is very similar to a case where two other deer carcasses in the same condition were found on Oxbow Road in Brant County. "We are working with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry; there is an offence of wastage. We are reaching out to all of our taxidermists in the area, if they do see something suspicious we are asking them to give the police a call so we can continue our investigation. If they are linked we'll obviously identify that, but right now we are treating it two separate instances of deer carcasses being dumped without the head and the fur but with all the meat intact on the body."

Constable Sanchuk says in his discussions with hunters, they've all told him they'd never leave the meat out to rot like that. "When you're looking at the investigating process right now we are just trying to determine why someone would remove the head off the deer, and the fur. What we are concerned about is that this is the second incident that we have had, and with Norfolk County we have just recently had an incident with 12 deer heads and several different deer legs that were improperly disposed of. Hunting is well respected, it is a gaming sport, but we want to do it in a safe, responsible, and mature manner."

Constable Sanchuk is asking the public to keep an eye out for anything suspicious, such as a vehicle leaving bags at the side of the road. "We are seeking the public's assistance with the investigation in Brant County with regards to anyone who may be seeing anything suspicious; we are asking them to have the courage to step forward and speak with police. This is actually the second time I have seen this, however that it is not to say that it hasn't occurred before and has gone unnoticed. Right now we have discovered these two investigations and what we are looking for is the public's assistance, if anyone has any information they are being asked to contact police."
