OPP Launch Move Over Campaign for Long Weekend

Police will be on the lookout for drivers who fail to slow down and move over for emergency vehicles and tow trucks this long weekend.

ONTARIO - The OPP will be hitting the roads this long weekend, making sure drivers slow down and move over for emergency vehicles.

Drivers are required to slow down and move over for emergency vehicles and tow trucks on the side of the road under the Highway Traffic Act. It's best to move over to the next lane if it's safe to do so.

Those who fail to slow down and move over could face a fine between $490 and $2,000 along with three demerit points. If it's a subsequent offense, they could face a fine between $1,000 to $4,000, have their license suspended for up two years, and up to six months of jail time.

The OPP issued close to 900 charges related to the slow-down, move over the law last year, even though it has been in effect for close to 20 years.
