Provincial Police are offering the public some tips to protect themselves against identity theft.
OXFORD COUNTY - The OPP are putting out a few tips to help minimize the risk of having your identity stolen.
One thing they say is before you reveal any personal information, find out how it will be used and if it will be shared and never give it out over the phone. Always pay attention to your billing cycles and follow up with creditors if your bills don't arrive on time. The police also recommend guarding your mail and if you move make sure you forward and re route your mailing address right away.
Other tips include putting a password on your credit card, bank and phone accounts and don't use easily available information like your mothers maiden name. Another thing to keep in mind is to limit the amount of cards you carry with you and never carry your social insurance card. The police recommend leaving it in a safe place along with your other personal information.
Criminals have been known to pick through garbage and recylcing bins, so if you toss out your mail make sure it is properly destroyed, or better yet take it to the local post office collection bins. Police want to put out the reminder as identity theft remains a huge concern in the region.
