OPP Remind Drivers To Watch Out For Deer

Deer are most commonly spotted on the roads between 5am and 7am in the morning and between 5pm and 11pm in the evening.

The OPP are reminding motorists in Oxford to keep a close eye out for deer trying to cross the road this time of year.

This is one of the peak times of the year when you will see the fury animals on our roadways. Police are reminding motorists to slow down and be extra careful during peak times between 5 am and 7 am and at night between 5 pm and 11 pm. OPP also suggest you slam the breaks when you see deer and do not try to swerve out of the way as that can lead to a more serious collision.

The OPP suggests motorists use the Watch-Steer-Brake and Stop method of avoiding encounters with any wildlife on the roadways.

- Watch the road ahead by scanning from shoulder to shoulder

- Watch for yellow wildlife warning signs – slowdown in these areas

- Use high beams and watch for glowing eyes of animals

- If you see glowing eyes – expect that other animals are nearby

- Steer in control – never swerve to avoid hitting an animal

- Brake firmly but don’t lock up your wheels – slowing will provide you with control

- Stop – safely … remember other animals may follow

- WATCH, STEER, BRAKE and STOP.
