Norfolk County OPP wants to remind people when it is appropriate to dial 911.
NORFOLK COUNTY - Norfolk County OPP looks after the safety of the public and they want to remind people on the importance of using 911 properly.
Officers received a call on January 1st around 4:00am after a 21-year-old man said he was lost and that he needed help getting to his parents house.
Officers did help the man get home safely, but OPP is urging all Norfolk County residents to use 911 when there is an emergency.
They ask to not call 911 about a power outage or to inquire about road conditions or even to order food. This is NOT an emergency.
Constable Ed Sanchuk says dialing 911 for non-emergencies could result in a slower response time for officers, preventing them from getting to a real emergency and putting the safety of others at risk.
"911 is for police, fire or medical emergencies when someone's health, safety or property is in jeopardy or a crime is in progress. In an emergency every second counts! Dial 911. Phone 1-888-310-1122 for non-emergencies. Accidental calls or abuse of 911 ties up emergency lines, communicators and officers which could result in the slower response to a real emergency, risking the safety of people who may need urgent help."
