Retaliatory tariffs for nearly 900 American products will take effect on September 8th.
OTTAWA - Ottawa has released more details about the retalitory tariffs against the United States.
They will affect nearly 900 American products starting September 8th.
Officials say American steel and aluminum tariffs will be doubled to 50 percent. There will also 50 percent tariffs for smartphones, golf clubs, gaming consoles, fishing rods, clothing, furniture, perfumes and more.
There will be a 25 percent tariff on appliances, agricultural machinery, dairy products, seafood and certain steel and aluminum derivatives products. A 15 percent tariff will also affect a small list of items including hand tools, air conditioners, forklifts, and more.
Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne stating the following during the announcement yesterday.
"When the United States of America asked too much and offered too little, we made a choice. We chose Canada."
This is in response to the 50 percent tariffs the United States announced for $28 billion worth of Canadian goods last week.
Ottawa also announced $7.5 billion support package for business affected by the US tariffs yesterday.
