The Lights of Love fundraiser raised more than $100,000 for VON Oxford Sakura House.
WOODSTOCK - The Lights of Love fundraiser for VON Oxford Sakura House raised over $100,000 in it's first year.
The fundraiser was created after the difficult decision to cancel Handbags for Hospice this year because of the pandemic. The Lights of Love fundraiser worked by having people give a minimum donation of $25.00 to have a commemorative light at the hospice in memory of a loved one, or in dedication of anyone working the front lines during the pandemic.
VON Oxford started out with a goal of raising $50,000 and they more than doubled that with $102,674. Manager of Fund Development Trish Gergich says they are extremely grateful for the community support.
"The community really just blew us away, we raised over $100,000 in 40 days, it was just remarkable and we want to thank everyone who donated."
Gergich explains why it is so crucial for Sakura House to have fundraiser's like this one.
"The Operations at Sakura House are not fully funded by the Government, so it's up to us in the community to actually pay for the day to day costs to keep it going and that at a minimum is over $600,000 that we need to raise every year, just to help pay for a social worker, the medicine, the food program, all those basic things that keep us running every day, so that the patients and families are cared for when they are there."
