After making changes to a recent sewer use by-law, staff will hold public consultations which will see them present and address questions before they bring it back to council for further consideration at a later date.
OXFORD COUNTY - A sewer use by-law was recently brought forward to Oxford County council.
The by-law includes new parameters for pollutants that are deemed unacceptable in the wastewater system
Warden Larry Martin says the next step will be to hold a public consultation.
"I think it's important to hold them moving forward, to get the feedback from the public and to let them know, 'okay this is coming.' It's mostly provincially driven so it's not as if we have any real say but at least we can let the people know 'brace yourself, this is coming, get prepared and is there anything you want to know.' And to lket them know why we're doing it and how we're doing it and what the end outcome hopefully will be."
He adds the consultation will see the County present the information before addressing questions from the audience.
The by-law last received an update over 20 years ago and the consultations will start to welcome feedback from the public and stakeholders.
He says this is a benefit to the County's environment.
"It's all environmentally driven as well. And everyone is getting more environmentally conscious so it's a step in the right direction."
In addition to new parameters, the by-law also includes new requirements for spill response and sampling and analysis.
Staff's report says changes to the current by-law are warranted and enforce enhancement measures. They will result in additional environmental protection and wastewater treatment reliability to customers.
He says following the consultation, the by-law will be presented again at another meeting at a later date.
